Aspirin vs Willow

Ray's Rave!

Yahoo news reported yesterday:

"Taking aspirin for several years can cut the risk of death from a wide range of cancers by between a third and half, a landmark study has found. Other evidence indicates that calcium in milk might enhance the drug&;s beneficial effects.

Scientists are stopping short of urging healthy people to take aspirin, which is known to increase the risk of internal bleeding.

But they say the new findings shift the risk-benefit balance in favour of aspirin, and could lead to a revision of medical guidelines.

Aspirin treatment to ward off cancer would probably be most effective between the ages of about 45 to 50, which is when when most cancers start to develop, say the researchers.

The drug is already taken by millions of Britons at risk of heart attacks or strokes.

Regular low doses of aspirin help to prevent the changes that lead to narrowed arteries and blood clots. But in recent years evidence has started to emerge of much wider benefits from aspirin, leading to its description as a "miracle drug".

A previous study has shown that a 75 milligram dose of aspirin a day can reduce death rates from bowel cancer by more than a third."

Regular low doses of aspirin help to prevent the changes that lead to narrowed arteries and blood clots. But in recent years evidence has started to emerge of much wider benefits from aspirin, leading to its description as a "miracle drug".

BREAKING NEWS!! It seems that an aspirin a day can reduce the chance of cancer by over 50% in most cases!?

But we also know that Aspirin, originally derived from salycin, obtained from the bark of the white willow for pain and inflammation,  (also found in Meadowsweet) can have interactions and side effects in some people. Steph&;s grandfather is a prime example of those in the &;60&;s who subscribed to the philosophy of "an asprin a day keeps heart attacks away"! Unfortunately, no one ever told him that aspirin is hard on the kidneys, and after taking aspirin for 30 years (and still having 2 heart attacks and triple bypass heart surgery) finally died of kidney failure after 5 years on a dialysis machine!

This is what happens when you remove the active constituent from a herbal medicine: it may become more effective, but it also may become more destructive.

I, personally would not like to take an aspirin a day, but will be happy to have a cup of herbal tea, whether it is white willow, meadow sweet, small flower willow (epilobium)!!

See what the herbalist Isabel Shipard has to say about White Willow and Meadowsweet:

"The use of willow bark dates back thousands of years, to the time of Hippocrates (400 BC) when patients were advised to chew on the bark to reduce fever and inflammation. Willow bark has been used throughout the  centuries in China and Europe, and continues to be used today for the  treatment of pain (particularly low back pain and osteoarthritis), headache, and inflammatory conditions such as bursitis and tendinitis. The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). It is thought to be responsible for the
pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb. In fact, in the  1800s, salicin was used to develop aspirin. White willow appears to be  slower than aspirin to bring pain relief, but its effects may last longer

The whole meadowsweet herb possesses a pleasant taste and flavour, the green parts having a similar aromatic character to the flowers, leading to the use of the plant as a strewing herb strewn on floors to give the rooms a pleasant aroma, and its use to flavour wine, beer and many vinegars. The flowers can be added to stewed fruit and jams, giving them a subtle almond flavor. It has many medicinal properties. The whole plant is a traditional remedy for an acidic stomach."
